How to make the most of an intimate wedding

As restrictions start to ease and the sun is shining upon us, I thought I'd take a moment to reflect on some of the small weddings I have undertaken in the past year and look at a few tips for making the most of a small wedding that falls within current Covid rules.

There is something magical about an intimate wedding, in fact one of the weddings I attended in Whitby of Alan and Sharon was one of my favourites; just the couple, their daughter and grandchildren, it was intimate, meaningful and full of joy.

It's not that I don't enjoy large weddings - trust me, as a photographer seeing relatives get together, old friends catch up and everybody sharing the couple's special day is a joy, but in the pandemic era I am suggesting that small weddings can have a special magic all of their own.

So here are my top tips based on the weddings I have been privileged to be a part of over the past year.

1. As you can cut down on the expenditure of catering for everybody else, spend it on something extra for the two of you - the perfect dress you always wanted or that stylish limousine. You can spend money on your biggest priorities and probably have a lot more left over than had you catered for hundreds, meaning that at some time in the future you can also think about that ideal honeymoon!

2. Only invite people really close to you; if you haven't seen that cousin you never really got on with for the past few years, well guess what, you have an opt out! Make it really intimate and just invite really close friends and relatives and don't feel that you even have to go to the maximum thirty. You might just have half a dozen people there and it will still feel special.

3. Get married during the week. There really isn't any advantage to having a weekend wedding if you are only thinking of the people who can attend because of work, and a weekday wedding venue is likely to be much cheaper.

4. Be thoughtful with your activities. Don't feel like you have to cut the cake or dance or do anything that you don't want to - just make it fun and enjoyable for the two of you.

5. Invest in your photographer - a good photographer will really bring out those special and intimate moments and with fewer guests people will naturally be more relaxed so he / she will be able to capture some great shots and create lasting memories that will be truly special.
